I knew I only had a few more minutes until Ly or Jamesâ impatience won out. A few more minutes of stillness until they would barge into the nave to see if there was anything they could do to help. A few more minutes until they found me, drink in hand, as I sat at the edge of a bed with a body we might have to bury in the morning.
I hadnât even bothered to look for the medical facility on the empty nave. A ventilator wasnât going to do shit. They would come up here though and escape the death a hundred feet below. I could go to Cyran and heal her broken bones, but there wasnât anything I could do for a broken heart.
I had put Rogue to rest on the bed, positioned much too comfortably for someone who wouldnât care. I had shut his eyes; green eyes that had been so full of a future that I had wanted. The thick sweater he was wearing had ridden up. Two of his circular scars were dull against the bronze skin of his abdomen.
I had learned to heal myself almost a decade earlier, something I was sure Rogue would have figured out pretty quick since he knew he was capable of it. My scars, the ones Nikon and Achilla had left me with, had been my main focus when I had learned to heal myself. A horrible nightmare that I wanted to permanently erase. Because scars arenât that pretty, but Iâd learned healing wasnât either.
What if we were different? What if the younger Rogue, this one, had kept his scars? As proof that the nightmares only made him stronger. This Rogue hadnât hurt Cyran. This version of me, when given the chance, had been more selfless than I ever dreamed I could be.
âHowâd you do it?â My voice sounded awkward against the metal walls. âControl the cold?â I sipped from the metal decanter I had found in the room, some kind of strong and stiff alcohol I didnât recognize. I did recognize the pungent ethanol odor though, and I had needed a damn drink.
Rogue and that kid, Viteam, had appeared out of nowhere. Right when everything was going to shit. I swallowed a low growl that crawled up my throat at the memory of Ly being dragged to the nave doors, almost lost. Images of James as he staggered forward, so ready and yet so wary of impending death.
Rogue strode right up to those men, knowing he would kill them. Knowing he could control those shadows that crept under my⦠his skin. The rioting chill that slithered along my bones. He had sent it out and those men had died. Only the men he had wanted to kill had fallen. I hadnât been able to do that, not once. Every time I tried to master the ice and death at my fingertips, it spread like something spilled.
Just like he knew those men would die when he unleashed the shadows, he had known the darkness from the Cerebral Vortex would devour him.
